Contemporary lofty Boston condo has lots of light
In the late 1990s plans were made to build the popular artist-style lofts in Jamaica Plain. By December 2000 the units were ready and sold quickly.
Now, one of the very desirable townhouse units is available for resale for the first time. The owners of that unit installed many updates through the years, making it even more appealing.
Stephen Lussier and Sarah Carroll of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage have listed that home, Unit G, at 83-85 Brookside Ave., for $489,900.
The location is excellent, says Lussier. It is possible to walk to the shops, bakeries, breweries, restaurants, gym and other Jamaica Plain attractions. It lies between the Stony Brook and the Green Street MBTA stations.
He advises going to the Green Street station in order to get a seat in the morning and getting off at the Stony Brook station to pick up wine and dinner in the evening.
The unit is all that you can imagine that an artist would want, which makes it wonderful for anyone. The high ceilings, the huge windows, the abundant light pouring in – all combine to make a lovely home.
And the views from the windows add to its appeal. The sky seems larger than in other places. The back courtyard of grass and beautiful shrubs looks amazing at any time of year.
The dining area has been incorporated into the main entertainment space and is open to the kitchen.
The enjoyable view from the front is of the Raherty Park and playground across the street where dog owners walk their dogs and children play.
Unit G has two bedrooms, a spa-like full bath and a half bath, an enormous living room and dining room, a chef’s kitchen with new appliances, a new laundry closet and wonderful storage within 1,924 +/- square feet of living space.
In addition, it has a front door to Brookside Avenue, a back door to the landscaped courtyard and the off-street parking space, plus amazing space and light.
Inside the front door on Brookside Avenue is a spacious foyer where there is a choice of open stairways down to a sitting room and bedroom or up to the main level, the entertainment area.
At the front of the entertainment level the ceiling of the 21- by 19-foot living room soars to 18 feet. Two tiers of enormous windows create a wall of light. That light gleams off the glistening, newly refinished wood floors. The trees of the park across the street provide a perfect contrast to the clean lines of the room.
The back of the living room is open to a 19- by 12-foot dining roomwith normal ceiling height. The triple windows there give views of the courtyard and the sky. An amazing designer chandelier hangs from the ceiling.
To the left of the dining room, a breakfast bar marks the beginning of the 14- by 10-foot custom, upgraded kitchen. The white cabinets are covered by dark granite that has flashes of color. Those various colors are picked up by the small iridescent tiles of the backsplash and the end wall.
The breakfast bar is two tiered. It is high on the dining side and is work height on the kitchen side. The stainless steel Frigidaire Gallery Series Professional appliances include a dishwasher, a four-burner gas range, and a side-by-side refrigerator freezer. A stainless microwave is above the range.
The iridescent mosaic backsplash has been extended to cover an entire section of a kitchen wall.
Designer pendant lighting above the breakfast bar, recessed lighting in the ceiling and under-cabinet lighting add to the light from the large window that gives views of the courtyard. A closet-size pantry adds to the storage space provided by the large cabinets.
The hallway at the end of the kitchen continues to the living room. A large coat closet, a laundry closet and a granite and tile half bath are off that hallway.
The open staircase with upgraded steel handrails gives even more visual space and looks like a design element on the entry side of the living room. The staircase leads down to the foyer or up to the master suite and on to the roof.
A half wall at the front of the master suite punctuated by two strips filled with opaque glass bricks allows light from the front window wall to fill the area. The 20- by 20-foot room has plenty of space for both sitting and sleeping. At the back of the room, large windows frame the sky. The double closet, like the others in the home, has custom built-ins to give even more space.
In the spa-like master bath, a square ceramic sink sits at one side of a black storage vanity.
A large vertical mirror that looks immovable lifts to show plenty of out-of-sight storage for necessary items like toothbrushes and toothpaste.
The open staircase is a distinctive architectural element in this loftlike townhouse.
The marble floor is warmed by radiant heat. A marble seat in the shower increases the enjoyment of the water jets and rainforest showerhead. Small oblongs of irregular marble line the walls, and river stones form the floor.
The bedroom/sitting room on the lowest level features the traditional concrete floor loft element and the retro element of a Murphy bed, but this one by California Closets. There are also four storage closets and a door to the courtyard.
The home has an integrated sound system throughout and central air conditioning. There are roof rights if a roof deck is desired.
