Custom-designed North End loft is sleek
In the North End at 90 North Washington St. in a turn-of-the-last-century building is a spectacular loft-like condominium that was completely renovated.
Its 2,219 square feet of living space possess two bedrooms and two luxurious baths and a grand open plan that lends itself to a couple of conversation areas, a dining space and a stunning kitchen that was taken from a showroom.
Rob Cohen of Boston Realty Advisors has listed this residence, Unit 4, for $974,000.
The mixed-use building has just three residential condos; two others comprise an office and an upscale Italian restaurant, Nebo.
Originally, the building was constructed for light manufacturing, and for much of the last century was used for storage. During the late 1940s, it housed a candy factory, and in the early 1960s, a silk screening company occupied some of the space.
In 1991 it was converted to condominiums.
The building has a recessed entry, which opens into a small lobby with a staircase and an elevator that offers direct key access into the condo.
Just beyond the elevator door is a small area like a foyer to take off your boots and coat.
The expansive kitchen lies directly ahead. It has been beautifully designed.
The kitchen is spacious with top-of-the-line furnishings plus a center island and a pantry pullout, conveniently built in next to the wall oven.
The L-shaped kitchen has a GE Monogram microwave and stainless steel refrigerator as well as a deep sink on the left; a Miele dishwasher is next to the sink. More counterspace is on the right, culminating with a stainless steel Miele wall oven and a tall, high–gloss, deep green pullout that holds pantry shelving.
Where the two counters come together, a hexagon of stainless steel holds the five-burner electric cooktop. The counters on either side are black granite. Above the cooktop is a Miele stainless steel hood.
The SieMatic cabinetry has a light gray lacquered surface, and one wall cabinet has a glass front.
There is even more workspace available on the center island, which has an overhang for bar stools and casual dining. The island is topped with multi-toned granite with a matte finish.
Tying this altogether is the Brazilian maple flooring, laid on an angle and stained a rich cherry color.
Throughout the home, the gleaming floors are maple, but only in the kitchen is the wood stained; the rest of the home has a natural color.
To the right of the kitchen the lofty space opens into a grand room where the ceiling height soars to 10 feet.
The building’s industrial past is evident with its columns and beams and pipes, which have been painted white.
One interior wall has exposed brick, which adds warmth to this space.
The main living space of Unit 4 has a 10-foot ceiling with two tracks of tiny halogen lights and four huge windows that overlook North Washington Street.
The current owners have created two seating areas at the front of the condo, and one of the spaces has been furnished with a long table and chair that could be used for a home office.
Four oversized windows with customized shades ensure lots of natural light throughout the day with a measure of privacy.
Closest to the kitchen is a dining area, defined by an interesting geometric wall painted silver that helps enclose the second bedroom. The wall extends at an angle but does not reach to the ceiling, which allows room for the uplighting of two transoms that are above and behind the wall.
Another transom of opaque glass is above the angular doorway into the second bedroom.
The master bedroom is next to this guest room and has sliding doors of opaque glass that can close it off from the rest of the condo. One wall has exposed brick, and a wall of three windows offers views of the beginning of the Rose Kennedy Greenway.
An en suite bath tiled with tan marble includes a glass-enclosed shower. Floor-to-ceiling sliding mirrors conceal compact closet space.
The master bedroom is large and has a sitting area. An en suite bath and a walk-in closet with customized shelving complete this room.
Also off this bedroom is a large walk-in closet with abundant built–in shelving.
Opposite the bedroom is a sumptuous bath with both a whirlpool tub set into a black marble deck and an oversized marble–tiled shower with two benches and a rain showerhead.
A window in the shower and a skylight outside the shower brighten this room. Another window is next to the toilet, beside which is a six-inch-deep shelf that runs along one wall, like a chair rail.
The white porcelain washbowl is set into a black porcelain molded vanity top.
Between this bath and the bedroom is a large closet with double doors painted silver that not only holds the mechanicals but also serves as storage for two bicycles.
And, next to the bath is a laundry closet equipped with a full-size, stacked washer and dryer.
This is a true luxury, New York-style loft that has been custom-designed, said Cohen.
