Mandarin Boston penthouse boasts fabulous terrace, deck
The Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Boylston Street is the new five-star hotel in Boston – with the emphasis on “new.” The sparkling status means the residences in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel are most prized – quarries for success.
Michele DeAngelis of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage has listed a spotless penthouse, No. 1D, at $3.95 million.
The Residences at the Mandarin Oriental have full use of the hotel’s many perks and appurtenances, including concierge service, spa, and food delivery from one of the gourmet restaurants on scene – or anything else you want, literally.
The byword of the Mandarin Oriental is “service.” And settling in to your new digs, which occupy part of the rooftop, should be a pleasant task with many hands to help.
Penthouse 1D occupies 1,985 square feet of interior space, but there is an extra 850-plus square feet of private outdoor terrace space – accessible through a personal elevator – that will surely be a delight in the warmer months.
Also a cooling pleasure is the 40-foot deck off the living room, located through sliding glass doors in the living room.
From the deck or the terrace, you can see the Charles River and the Back Bay skyline.
The terrace is retrofitted with a gas line for a grill; there are also hookups for water and lights.
The foyer is large and welcoming. The floors throughout are a rich dark ebony.
You enter a large entry foyer with large custom closets. The vaulted ceiling in the main single-floor living area is 11 feet high, with walls of south-facing sliding glass covered with custom blinds. These walls of glass open up to the 40-foot terrace just off the living space.
The floors are rich dark ebony. There is recessed lighting and custom moldings. And along the far wall of the large open room is the fireplace wall, with a fireplace surrounded by shelving and a mounted Sony flat screen TV.
The views out of the wall of windows are those classic Back Bay vistas of the John Hancock tower and the Prudential Center.
The kitchen adjacent to the living area is a startling space. The lighting is chic, with overhead spots. The cabinetry is Poggenpohl’s Swiss walnut with a honey hue.
The Sub-Zero refrigerator is hidden away in this wall of Swiss walnut. So is the cabinetry, which includes two pullout pantries and custom corner storage.
The stunning kitchen next to the living area is equipped with high-end appliances and Poggenpohl cabinetry.
The non-wood fronted cabinets are white with stainless pulls. There is a stainless backsplash and Corian countertops.
In addition to the Sub-Zero refrigerator “over and under” that has two drawers, the kitchen also includes a Sub-Zero wine cooler. Actually, it is called a “wine center” with refrigerator and freezer/icemaker drawers and “wine captain” (not a human server but a wine preserver that you vino aficionados will know is quite cool).
Miele makes all the rest of the appliances – the five-burner stovetop, the microwave, oven, convection oven, venting hood, built-in coffee maker, warming drawer and dishwasher. There is a half bath convenient to the living/dining area – a powder room with a marble floor, a hammered nickel sink, onyx countertop and Waterworks hardware.
The unit also includes a separate utility room off the master bedroom that has a full-sized Whirlpool washer and dryer, hot water heater and a hub for cable and surround-sound pre-wiring.
Near this utility room is also a private elevator that takes you to the rooftop deck.
The skyscrapers of the Back Bay are visible from the deck off the living room. There also is a spacious terrace.
Penthouse 1D at the Mandarin Oriental has two bedrooms on either side of the living space. The guest bedroom or home office is a generous space with its own wall of windows, with access to the terrace, and a wall-mount space for a TV.
This room has a well-appointed en suite tiled bath that includes a double-sized shower, surrounded by frameless glass. The floor of the bath is marble and so are the countertops. This bedroom has a large walk-in closet with all California closet built-ins.
The master suite also includes a luxurious built-in closet that functions more as a dressing room and includes a Kohler vanity table with porcelain sink. Yet, there is also a lavish bath area that might not give you any chance to run to the closet.
The custom vanity in the bath has two sinks and many drawers for storage. The room is covered with porcelain tiles.
There is a cast-iron soaking tub that could be its own private ocean. The tub is at least 4 feet deep. And there is a double shower. However, when you are feeling private, the toilet is hidden behind a glass door.
The master bedroom boasts a large walk-in closet with built-ins and a lavish en suite marble bath.
In addition to all the glass, stainless, marble and other riches, Penthouse 1D at the Mandarin Oriental also comes with an additional storage space as well as a deeded garage parking space.
If you needed any more incentive to lure you, the transparent cube known as the Apple store is right across the street.
