Online auction set for Boston condo
A one-bedroom Back Bay condo at 416 Marlborough St. is to be auctioned online between 3 and 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, starting with a minimum bid of $315,000.
“Auctions have been used to sell residential condo developments recently, but what makes this different is the online format of the auction,” said Todd Mikelonis of the Charlesgate Realty Group.
It is similar to an eBay auction, with special modifications for real estate. Michael DiMella, managing partner of Charlesgate, said an out-of-state individual wants to sell his 843-square-foot condo so that he can fund his business.
When the unit first came on the market in June, it was listed at $525,000.
Designed by Willard T. Sears and built in 1895, the Marlborough was a fashionable apartment hotel. In 1988 it was converted to condominiums.
Staffed by a concierge, the building has been fully renovated and features European-style interiors.
No. 202 is on the second floor of the nine-story elevator building and faces south.
The south-facing carpeted living room with wide windows is bathed in sunlight.
The kitchen boasts updated black appliances that contrast with the white cabinetry and counters, and the unit has a washer/dryer. The bath has marble finishes.
Amenities include a spacious common roof deck with panoramic views and an exercise room in the basement where there is additional storage space. There is a bike room as well. The building is pet friendly.
The auction will be held between 3 and 7 p.m. Nov. 20 and will have no hidden reserve.
Bidders must preregister and provide a buyer’s deposit. The winning bidder will be assessed a 0.5 percent buyer’s premium.

The compact kitchen has been updated with black appliances that contrast with the white cabinetry.
DiMella said he has seen commercial property auctioned online but has not seen an individual condo in Boston sold this way. This is not a bank-owned property, he said.
