Stunning Beacon Hill condo has private deck
A magnificent home at the top of Beacon Hill, just steps from the State House, has just become available.
Located on Myrtle Street between Hancock and Joy streets, the condominium has one-plus bedrooms, a huge roof deck just outside the master bedroom and amenities that give the feeling of an elegant Paris apartment worthy of being a movie set.
Rob Cohen of Boston Realty Advisors has listed it at $614,000.
The Boston Street Advisor ranks Myrtle Street as the fourth best street in Beacon Hill or the Back Bay. That is a higher rating than Newbury Street, Beacon Street, or even Louisburg Square.
The only higher rated streets are Marlborough Street, Commonwealth Avenue and Brimmer Street.
Myrtle is a quiet street with several businesses, including a pizza shop, a laundromat, the Beacon Hill Times, a plumber and a liquor and convenience mart. They are all so unobtrusive that you would almost have to know where they are in order to be able to find them.
The Myrtle Street Playground is also there. A grand reopening was held last October highlighting the improvements, including a playhouse for small children and a new rubber surface under the play equipment.
Two short blocks from the Myrtle Street Playground is 3 Myrtle St., which was probably built around 1875 since it is attached to 57 Hancock St., a French Second Empire home that was built then.
Double doors with a transom open into the common foyer.
The south-facing 3 Myrtle has five floors, each with a floor-through condominium with large windows on each floor. The second floor windows have decorative ironwork balconies reminiscent of New Orleans.
Two steps up from the brick sidewalk are the handsome double front doors that open like French doors to the common foyer. They are carved wood with a large clear glass transom above them.
Inside a flight of stairs on the right lead to the open second floor landing where Unit 2 is located. Its front door opens to an entry hall. The living room and a coat closet are to the left and the bedroom is to the right.
The living room has a feeling of elegant serenity. It is spacious and has a ceiling that is just an inch less than 11 feet.
The oak floors are stained walnut and gleam in the light streaming through the south-facing windows.
White paneled wainscoting circles the room.
A formal dining room has been created in this room, which could serve as a nursery.
Warm creamy yellow walls rise above the wainscoting and are topped by very deep crown molding that rims the ceiling. Recessed lighting helps light the room.
On the west side a fireplace centers the wall and built-in cabinets topped by custom bookcases are on each side of it.
Just above the fireplace opening a carved swag of fruit and flowers graces the mantelpiece. On each side of the fireplace opening, slender columns seem to support the brackets that hold the mantelshelf.
Geometric forms decorate the area between the brackets. Above the mantelshelf, grooved pilasters outline a large mirror and support an open pediment centered by a flower-filled urn that rises almost to the crown molding.
On the south side of the room two windows that are almost floor-to-ceiling give views of the decorative iron railing and the brick row houses along Myrtle Street.
On the east side, a wide doorway with French doors opens to a formal dining room or nursery. The entry hall is on the northeast side, and the doorway to the chef’s kitchen is on the northwest side of the living room.
The formal dining room or nursery is beautiful from the living room. White wainscoting circles the room. There is a tall window that gives the same views as those in the living room.
Across from the window is a wall of white custom floor cabinets and wall shelving.
The kitchen features butcher block countertops and tall, custom-built wall cabinets.
The east wall between the two holds a large mirror framed by pilasters.
The kitchen is wonderful. It is a perfect size for one or two cooks. The ceiling is almost 11 feet high with glass-fronted storage cabinets high on each side. Below them the white custom wall and floor cabinets give ample space for daily use.
The countertops are butcher block, giving a warm feeling to the space. The professional appliances include a side-by-side refrigerator freezer, a wall oven, a cooktop, a microwave and a dishwasher. All are stainless steel, except the dishwasher that is paneled to match the cabinets.
The spa-like full bath off the entry hall features white tile formed to resemble wooden paneling.
The master bedroom at the end of the hall is inviting. There is an entire wall of custom closets, a floor-to-almost-ceiling window that overlooks a courtyard and French doors that open to a huge private 26- by 12-foot roof deck.
Off the northeast side of the bedroom is a study with built-in shelving, a desk and wiring for high-speed Internet.
The roof deck off the bedroom is private.
A window there gives views of the roof deck.
The building is professionally managed. There is extra storage in the basement as well as a laundry room. The unit has individually controlled central heat and air conditioning.
